Upcoming presentation: Proofreading and copywriting for translators: tips, tools and techniques

About Proofreading, About Writing, Speaking
I'm really excited to be a speaker for the Chartered Institute of Linguists. At the webinar, I will be talking about proofreading and copywriting and, in particular, how they are relevant to translators. Translators might want to know how to use copywriting skills to promote their businesses or how best to proofread the work they produce, or the work of other translators. I will go through all of that and more. As you can see on the event page, Translators in all sectors can benefit from learning proofreading and copywriting skills. Join freelance writer, editor and proofreader Philippa Willitts as she guides you through the tools and tips you need to improve your proofreading skills and learn about how copywriting can help you to promote your work. A new year update for 2021

A new year update for 2021

Freelancing, news
Nobody needs another blog post about how weird 2020 was. Nor about how weird the start of 2021 has been already. But, in short, totally weird. Now, onto the rest of it all. What I'm up to I continue to work hard. Most of my work is writing, proofreading and editing. Last year, I proofread four full-length books and many, many job applications. This may be symptomatic of how many people lost their jobs in the midst of the international crisis. Interestingly, I didn't proofread as many essays and theses last year as I usually do; perhaps due to the same. [caption id="attachment_2574" align="alignright" width="334"] Fireworks[/caption] In terms of writing, most of what I do currently is ghost writing blog posts for business clients. Usually SMEs, these businesses know that…

About Proofreading
I spend so much of my life creating content for other people's websites that I frequently neglect my own. Weeds start to grow and I put post and page ideas on a list that is ignored for weeks and months on end. Then, one day, I get myself together and remind myself that this little corner of the interwebs is my connection to you. The whole point is to let you know that there are problems I can solve, and when I write about them here, you become aware that you can get help with this stuff. Sometimes you just need to hear something nice

About Proofreading
I read Show Your Work by Austin Kleon a few months ago but, despite my best intentions, I keep forgetting to actually show my work. I set up a Pinterest board for the purpose but it's sparse, to say the least. So today, as I was designing a flyer for my proofreading services, I remembered the concept and decided to show my work on Twitter. https://twitter.com/PhilippaWrites/status/525316396784558081 I was really pleased, then, to get the following tweets from a former proofreading client in response. https://twitter.com/_la_mysterieuse/status/525317236899459072 https://twitter.com/_la_mysterieuse/status/525317346958016512 I really like proofreading. I know a lot of freelance writers do it just because it's an extra skill they can offer, but they don't really value it much. However, I thoroughly enjoy having the opportunity to fix things and improve somebody's chances, so it's absolutely…

Podcast Episode 19: How to Proofread Your Own Work

About Proofreading, Podcast
We ran out of storage space for our earliest episodes. But fear not, we have made these many, many hours of freelance writing goodness available for just £10. If you want access to them all, please click Add to Cart and buy through our e-junkie account for instant access. As a freelance writer, there are times when it is impractical or unrealistic to hire an external proofreader to check through everything you write. A full work of fiction or an entire book will, without question, require a professional proofreader and editor, but for 500 word articles or 700 word blog posts we need to be able to check and double-check our own writing to make sure that everything we submit is perfect. In this solo episode, I discuss numerous tactics…

An Open Letter to @Joe_Eastwood

About Proofreading
I saw the call via your Twitter account for proofreaders and followed the link to find out more. I found that you are looking for people to proofread 50,000 words in a week, in exchange for an advance copy of the book. I can also see, with a quick amazon search that you are not giving away your other books for free, so if you are earning from them, it is only reasonable that you pay others for any work they do for you. My usual proofreading rate is £8 per 1,000 words. If you wanted 50,000 words in a week I would also have to add a rush fee, but even ignoring that, the fee I would request for 50,000 words is £400. Now, unless a copy of your upcoming…
